Established in 1969, Venkataramanan Associates (VA) celebrates 55 years of architectural practice this November. From its humble beginnings, VA has grown into a practice of over 200 architects, contributing to the design and construction of millions of square feet across diverse geographies. This exhibition traces the evolution of VA’s design thinking, ethos, and methodology, reflecting on the political, economic, and social circumstances that have shaped the practice and the country.

Over five decades, VA has continuously redefined its role within the architectural landscape, negotiating the complexities of an increasingly multifaceted and large-scale industry. Architectural education often emphasizes the architect as the central figure in design, yet real-world practice reveals a more intricate process—where multiple people, contingencies, and external forces contribute to the final outcome. This exhibition delves into the delicate balance architects navigate, between creative intent and the realities of practice. It examines how VA has confronted these challenges, allowing for flexibility and evolution in its approach to architecture.

The narrative also explores the tools of architectural representation and how they have transformed over the years. With a focus on how ideas are conceptualized, communicated, detailed, right through to execution, the exhibition provides a lens through which to understand the shifts that have shaped the architectural practice at VA. This exhibition offers a retrospective of VA’s journey while engaging with the future possibilities of architecture in a rapidly changing world.

This GIS mapping exhibit showcases VA’s transformative impact on Bengaluru through its architectural projects spanning diverse scales, typologies, and locations—from central city landmarks to peripheral developments. Mapped chronologically, the exhibit traces the city’s architectural evolution alongside its expanding boundaries, illustrating VA’s role in shaping the city.

Blending data with design, this interactive projection offers a comprehensive view of Bengaluru’s growth. Visitors can explore how different periods of Bengaluru’s growth and economy are seen through the type and scale of the architectural projects of the firm.
