The K100 drain in Bengaluru, which stretches approximately 12 kilometers from Kalasipalaya to Bellandur, represents a critical component of the city’s stormwater management system. As part of the ongoing K100 Citizens’ Waterway Project, there was a need for ecological signage along this drain to enhance the walkability inside the drain, raise awareness and improve sustainable practices.

Disseminating Ecological Information
Ecological signage can provide vital information about the local ecosystem, including details on native flora and fauna, the importance of stormwater drains in urban environments, and the ecological benefits of maintaining clean waterways. By educating the public on these topics, the signage can foster a deeper appreciation for the environment and encourage responsible behavior towards waste management and pollution reduction.

Raising Awareness
Signage along the K100 drain can highlight the challenges faced by local water bodies, such as pollution and habitat degradation. By showcasing statistics about water quality and biodiversity, as well as information about ongoing restoration efforts. By framing these actions within the context of community responsibility and environmental stewardship, the signs can inspire collective action towards sustainability.

Providing for Wayfinding
Wayfinding signs help guide pedestrians along the path, ensuring they are aware of emergency exits and cautionary notices about potential hazards such as slippery surfaces or areas prone to flooding. Additionally, they provide information on places that the new pathway connects them to including bus stops, metro stations and other landmarks.

Providing Regulatory Signage
Given that the K100 drain allows public access for approximately 5 kilometers, it is essential to include regulatory signage that informs users of rules regarding behavior within this space. This encompasses guidelines on permissible activities, safety regulations, and environmental protection measures to inform public behaviour in and around the storm water drain.

Design Considerations:

The design of these signs should utilize bright colors that contrast sharply with the urban landscape to enhance visibility and legibility. This approach not only aids in quick recognition but also ensures that important information is easily accessible to all users, including those with visual impairments.

The proposed signage can be categorized into four distinct types:

  1. Informational Signage: Provides educational content about the ecosystem, height clearances and High Flood Levels.

2. Identification Signage: Marks specific locations or features along the drain like name of secondary drains, footbridges and gates.

3. Directional Signage: Guides users along their path and indicates emergency exits.

4. Regulatory & Awareness Signage: Outlines rules for safe usage and promotes environmental awareness.

In conclusion, implementing ecological signage along the K100 drain is essential not only for enhancing public knowledge and awareness but also for fostering sustainable practices among residents. By providing clear information and guidance within this urban waterway, Bengaluru can transform its stormwater management infrastructure into a model of ecological responsibility and community engagement.
