In the quiet bylanes of Krishnappa Garden, Bengaluru, stands a space that defies conventional categorisation. At once a home, an architectural studio, and a repository of urban India’s written history, the Urbs Indis Library is a unique, publicly-accessible collection of rare books curated by Robert Stephens.

As part of the run-up to the launch of the BLR Reads Library and Archive, this talk will explore the making of this off-grid library—where traditional materials like dry masonry wells and century-old reclaimed teak wood harmonise with contemporary solar panels and natural water treatment systems. Robert will share stories of an 18-year journey that bridges historical documentation and lived space, personal memory and public access.
