Bengaluru, as we all know has been a fast growing, metropolis for a few decades. Just as the agricultural land, and water bodies in and around the city are shrinking, the quantity and diversity of the water and agricultural produce consumed by Bengaluru has only increased. While, mega infrastructure projects over the last century have been proposed to address the city’s growing needs, they focused predominantly on the expansion of the city without holistically considering the full range of realities; including public health and related environment factors.
The cosmopolitan urban population is becoming more aware of their health and lifestyle, consciously opting for more ‘sustainable’ model. While many consumer goods, lifestyle support groups are addressing these concerns, we need to recognise that our health is intricately connected to the health of the urban systems and networks. These raise concerns not only about pressing environmental and public health, but also the sustainable growth of the city itself. It underscores the urgency of delving deeper into understanding interdependence of lives and livelihoods and resources in the urban, peri-urban and rural areas.
We held a series of events in the summer of 2024, with data jams, film screenings and public lectures to delve further into this topic.
